Still with me? Great! So, let’s talk about how to have a hot, fun, natural Valentine’s Day.

Let’s be honest…

Before we get to the recipes and the game, let’s get a little up-close and personal. Now… I don’t want to offend anyone. But, I AM the Hot Oily Mumma and the chances are good that you’ll want to know this information at some point in your life. How do I know that? Whenever I run a Healthy Hormones workshop this question eventually comes up. To clarify – women want to know about natural lubricants.

Why lubricants?

Whether they feel comfortable talking about it or not, for many women vaginal dryness is a problem. It can be caused by hormonal imbalance, illness, stress or any number of other factors. Particularly as we age, our bodies aren’t making as much oestrogen as we used to and subsequently this can mean a lack of blood flow to the vagina, causing dryness and pain. As a result, many women turn to lubricants to help this issue.

Why choose a natural lubricant?

Have you ever stopped to think about the ingredients in most lubricants? In a 2014 study in the Journal of Pharmaceutics some lubricants did not meet the recommended pH and osmolality standards. (Osmolality means how concentrated the lubricant is) Both of these things mean that the lubricant may cause irritation, affect fertility and increase the risk of infections. This is serious stuff!

Additionally, the School of Public Health at the University of California, Berkeley found that some lubricants contained nasty endocrine disrupting chemicals such as parabens and even synthetic fragrances. You don’t want these things in your house, let alone on your delicate parts!

Coconut oil – an amazing natural lubricant

With this in mind, let’s take things into our own hands (so to speak!) and talk about using a natural lubricant. My favourite is good old coconut oil. One word of caution though – any oil-based lubricant can break down latex. Hence it’s suitable for anyone who uses condoms.

I love coconut oil because it has great moisturising properties, which make it an amazing longer-lasting natural lubricant. Unrefined coconut oil is best as it’s not bleached like the refined version is. I also prefer not to use fractionated coconut oil which has had the long-chain fatty acids removed via hydrolysis and steam distillation.

Warning – coconut oil can stain your sheets so keep this in mind before you splash it around. If you’re prone to vaginal infections it may disrupt the pH of your vagina because it has antiviral and antibacterial properties so read on for another suggestion. I haven’t had this happen, so coconut oil is definitely my favourite. so coconut oil is definitely my favourite.
