Lavender
The French scientist René-Maurice Gattefossé was the first to discover the amazing benefits of Lanvender when he severely burnt his arm in a laboratory explosion. University of Miami researchers discovered that inhaling Lavender oil increased beta waves in the brain, suggesting heightened relaxation.
Look out! True Lavender is often adulterated with hybrid Lavender (Lavendin), synthetic linalool, and linalool acetate, or synthetic fragrances like ethyl vanillin.
There’s no doubt that Lavender is the best essential oil to have in your diffuser or add to your bath before bed!
- Relaxing Bath: Transform your bath into a spa experience by adding 5-10 drops of Lavender oil. The calming scent will melt away your stress, leaving you feeling serene and rejuvenated.
- Sleep Aid: Struggling with sleep? Sprinkle a few drops of Lavender oil on your pillow or diffuse it in your bedroom. You’ll drift off to dreamland in no time, enjoying a peaceful, uninterrupted sleep.
- Skin Soother: Got unhappy skin? Dab diluted Lavender oil on the affected area. It’s a natural way to soothe your skin and promote faster healing.
- DIY Linen Spray: Create a calming linen and room spray by mixing 10 drops of Lavender oil with water in a spray bottle. Spritz it on your sheets and around the room for a soothing ambiance.
Frankincense
In our house we call Frankincense the ‘attitude adjuster’. So, no matter whether your family members are feeling down or just plain cranky that’s the time to pull out the Frankincense! Either pop it in the diffuser or apply it topically in a roller or just a drop on pulse points.
And the added benefit? If you’re over thirty and worried about the roadmaps on your face – add a few drops to your skin-care regime as well.
- Facial Serum: Elevate your skincare routine by adding a few drops of Frankincense oil to your moisturiser. Its anti-aging properties will leave your skin glowing and youthful.
- Meditation Aid: Enhance your meditation sessions by diffusing Frankincense oil or even inhaling directly from the bottle. Its grounding scent helps deepen your practice, promoting inner peace and focus.
- Feeling Congested: Frankincense is traditionally used in Aromatherapy to decrease, reduce, and relieve mild upper respiratory tract congestion.*
- Experienced Tip: Blend with Myrrh and Sandalwood for a deep and intense spiritual medication session.
Lemon
Lemon is amazing for teenage skin! My girls are always seeing these expensive face serums on social media. But it’s so much cheaper to make your own with a few drops of Lemon, Lavender, Frankincense and Tea Tree essential oils combined with a carrier oil like Jojoba. And it works SO much better!
What if you’re no longer a teenager? Then add Lemon to a carrier oil and apply it directly on those annoying ‘bumpy bits’ on the tops of your legs or massage it into any visible veins on the backs of your legs for some great results.
Note: Lemon is a photosensitive essential oil, so don’t apply it on your skin before you go out in the sun.
- All-Purpose Cleaner: Ditch the harsh chemicals and make your own cleaner. Mix 10 drops of Lemon oil with water and vinegar in a spray bottle. It’s perfect for cleaning surfaces and leaves a refreshing citrus scent.
- Air Freshener: Freshen up any room by diffusing Lemon oil. Its bright, clean aroma is sure to lift your spirits and eliminate unwanted odors.
- Grease Remover: Struggling with sticky residue or grease stains? Apply a drop of Lemon oil to the spot, then wipe away. It’s a natural and effective solution.
- Flavor Enhancer: Add a drop of Lemon oil to your water or tea for a zesty flavour boost. Plus, it offers detox benefits and a refreshing twist to your drink.
Orange
You’ve probably heard me say before that Orange makes you happy. It’s a good oil to diffuse to start the day off right. I’m beginning to see more and more kids getting anxious about attending school – or just life in general. Orange is great to help them with this as well.
And here’s a bonus tip – keep a bottle in the bathroom and add a drop to your toothpaste for extra white teeth.
- Mood Booster: Feeling down? Diffuse Orange oil to brighten your mood and reduce anxiety. Its cheerful scent is a natural way to uplift your spirits.
- Natural Deodoriser: Combat unpleasant odors by adding a few drops of Orange oil to baking soda. Sprinkle it on your carpets, let it sit, then vacuum for a fresh, clean scent.
- Wood Polish: Keep your wooden furniture looking its best. Mix Orange oil with olive oil for a natural polish that nourishes the wood and leaves a lovely shine.
- DIY Lip Balm: Pamper your lips with a homemade lip balm. Combine Orange oil with coconut oil and beeswax for a nourishing and citrus-flavoured treat.
RC (Respiratory Care)
RC Essential Oil is a powerful blend of Spruce, Cypress, and three types of Eucalyptus oils (E. globulus, E. radiata, and E. citriodora).
- Breathing Aid: Feeling stuffed up in the winter months? Diffuse or apply diluted RC oil on your chest and neck to breathe easier breathing.
- Shower Steam: Turn your shower into a mini spa. Add a few drops of RC oil to the shower floor and inhale the invigorating steam for a refreshing experience.
- Chest Rub: Mix RC oil with a carrier oil and rub it on your chest to soothe and comfort you and your family. And it’s free of all those nasty petrochemicals found in traditional chest rubs.
- Gym Bag/ Gym Shoe Freshener: Keep your gym bag and gym shoes smelling fresh. Put a few drops of RC oil on a cotton ball and place it in your bag or shoes to combat any odours.
Peppermint
Obviously, one of the easiest ways to use Peppermint is in your cooking. And it tastes great in chocolate and chocolate brownies!
But if you’re like me and trying to drop a couple of kilograms, inhaling Peppermint or doing a ‘Pep lick’ (licking a drop of Peppermint essential oil off the back of your hand… yep, it’s a thing!) can help stop those hunger cravings.
- Energy Boost: Need a quick pick-me-up? Diffuse or inhale Peppermint oil directly for an instant energy boost that helps you stay alert and focused.
- Headache Relief: Peppermint has been traditionally used in Aromatherapy to relieve headache symptoms and decrease/reduce the symptoms and duration of mild migraines. Apply diluted Peppermint oil to your temples and neck for cooling relief and reduced pain.*
- DIY Mouthwash: Freshen your breath with a homemade mouthwash. Mix a few drops of Peppermint oil with water and swish for a minty clean feeling.
- Bug Repellent: Keep pests at bay. Use Peppermint oil around windows and doors to deter ants and spiders naturally.
DiGize
We all know that DiGize is the go-to oil blend after a big meal. But did you know that if you haven’t got Clary Sage or Dragon Time when it’s ‘that time of the month’ you can apply DiGize on your lower belly to get some relief?
- Digestive Aid: Experiencing discomfort after eating? Rub diluted DiGize oil on your abdomen to ease discomfort and enjoy the benefits of one of Young Living’s most unique essential oil blends, combining Tarragon, Ginger, Peppermint, Juniper, Lemongrass, Anise, and Patchouli oils.
- Travel Companion: Feeling dodgy in the car, on the plane or on the ship? Don’t let it ruin your trip. Keep DiGize oil on hand and apply it to your chest, wrists or abdomen to bring relief.
- Diffuse in the Car: Kids struggling on those winding roads? Try diffusing DiGize with the Wanderful Diffuser – it runs from your vehicle’s USB outlet.
- Experienced Tip: Combine DiGize with Fennel and Ginger to supercharge its relieving effects.
Thieves
Thieves essential oil is a powerful combination of Clove, Lemon, Cinnamon, Eucalyptus Radiata, and Rosemary essential oils for an aromatic blend that fills any space with a rich, spicy aroma. Inspired by the fascinating legend of four 15th-century French thieves who formulated a special aromatic combination composed of clove, rosemary, and other botanicals used while robbing the dead and dying! It’s one of Young Living’s most popular products.
- Hand Sanitizer: Make your own natural hand sanitizer. Mix Thieves oil with aloe vera gel for a powerful, germ-fighting solution that’s gentle on your skin.

Peace and Calming
Peace & Calming essential oil is a gentle, sweet blend of Tangerine, Orange, Ylang Ylang, Patchouli, and Blue Tansy. It’s comforting, fresh and it creates a relaxing environment that’s great for the entire family. Peace & Calming promotes calm focus, and can help channel mental energy in a positive direction.

Stress Away
Stress Away essential oil blend contains a unique combination of Lime essential oil and Vanilla extract. It’s this distinct mix of Vanilla and Lime that gives Stress Away its unique and pleasant aroma, among other benefits. Stress Away also includes Copaiba, which has a history of beneficial properties in topical application; Lavender, with its refreshing and calming scent; and Cedarwood, which features the powerful plant constituent cedrol. These ingredients are expertly blended with the exotic scent of Ocotea, a unique Ecuadorian-sourced essential oil.
- Calming Roller: Make a portable stress relief roller. Combine Stress Away oil with a carrier oil in a roller bottle. Apply to your wrists and temples whenever you need a moment of calm.

Panaway
Try keeping your Panaway beside the bed so you can apply it first thing in the morning if you struggle to get out of bed because of aches and pains.
I’m always amazed when I look up the emotional uses for essential oils. For example, Panaway is a good blend to overcome a fear of emotions. Apply it to the fascia point – at the top of your thigh (where your thigh bones attaches to your hip). Why? Because that works on your psoas muscle – the muscle that helps pull your legs up into the foetal position when you’re afraid.
- Muscle Relief: Soothe tired muscles and joints. Apply diluted Panaway oil to the affected areas for natural relief after a long day.
- Post-Workout Recovery: Help your muscles recover after exercise. Use Panaway oil to massage tired muscles and promote faster recovery.
- Massage Oil: Treat yourself to a relaxing massage. Combine Panaway oil with a carrier oil for a soothing and relieving massage experience.
- Tension Relief: Combat tension naturally. Apply Panaway oil to your temples and neck to ease the tension and help relieve feelings of stress.
Valor
Valor essential oil blend was a favourite of Young Living founder D. Gary Young. Its woodsy, positive scent comes from a blend of Northern Lights Black Spruce, Blue Tansy, and Frankincense.

- Confidence Booster: Need a confidence boost? Diffuse or apply Valor oil to your wrists before important events to enhance your courage and self-assurance.
