Best DIY Glow Serum for Your Skin Type

glow serum with Young Living essential oils

With so many glow serum recipes floating around how do you know which is the best glow serum for your skin type? Great question! And here’s the answer…

Why customise your skincare serum?

If you haven’t already customised your own skincare serum with essential oils, you’re really missing out! Glow serums are one of the easiest DIYs and safest swaps you can make as soon as you get your Starter Bundle. Best of all, you’ll know exactly what’s going on your skin and into your body. No nasty fragrance, parabens, preservatives, endocrine disrupters, carcinogens… just pure plant-based goodness.

I use my glow serum daily, on a clean face, in place of moisturiser or, if you feel your skin still needs a moisturiser, pop it over the top of the glow serum.

Check out some of these simple Glow Serum Recipes I have made over the years to find a recipe suitable for your skin.

Starter Bundle Glow Serum

If you just got your Starter Bundle and are new to using essential oils on your skin then I always recommend a blend of Lavender and Frankincense. This is a super gentle blend that is great for most types of skin (both of these essential oils are in your starter bundle).

It’s as simple as adding the following to a 15 ml Glass Serum bottle:

10 drops Lavender essential oil

10 drops Frankincense essential oil

Top with a carrier oil of your choice such as Rosehip, Jojoba or Young Living’s V6 Vegetable Complex. Jojoba closely mimics the skin’s natural sebum, making it a great oil for normal, dry and oily skin types. A little extra glow

I use this Glow Serum for just that – a little extra glow, beneath my morning and evening moisturiser but mostly just alone. Another small step is taken to reduce chemical-filled products I’ve been using on my skin for years, and my skin loves it.

  • 7 Frankincense essential oil
  • 7 Copaiba essential oil
  • 7 Lavender essential oil
  • 3 Carrot Seed essential oil

Add all the essential oils in a 15 ml Glass Serum bottle, topped with your favourite carrier oil.

Care for some carrot seed oil?

If you’re looking for hydrated skin (and hair), a warm, woodsy scent, and something to help you through occasional skin irritations, then grab yourself a bottle of Carrot Seed essential oil! You’ll also see that it is in our Dark Spot Glow Serum recipe too as I love this little gem!!! You can learn more about Carrot Seed oil and how to use it in my blog post – How do I use Carrot Seed Essential Oil?

Natives in northern Brazil have used Copaiba oil and resin since at least the 16th century. Copaiba essential oil is a product of steam distilling the gum resin tapped from the Brazilian Copaifera reticulata tree.

With the powerful compound beta-caryophyllene and a uniquely sweet aromatic profile, Copaiba helps create a relaxing atmosphere and it is a great addition to your daily skin care routine.

Helichrysum is great for those with oily skin. In addition to this, it’s one of the few essential oils that contain “diketones,” which can help reduce the appearance of age spots and discoloration. Helichrysum is touted as the perfect addition to skin care formulations for those with sensitive skin.

Oily Skin Glow Serum

Won’t it make my skin more oily?

The body naturally produces SEBUM oil to keep the skin healthy as a protective barrier to the environment. SEBUM oil is released by the Sebaceous Gland attached to Hair Follicles in order to keep the skin from drying out.

Your skin naturally lubricates itself with oil, and it naturally produces oil because it needs it.

This glow serum is gentle on your skin and tough on pore-clogging buildup to improve texture and leave your skin glowing.
