Slime Recipe Using Essential Oils

slime and kids

Do your kids like to make slime? My girls sure do. They’re always bugging me to buy them the slime kits from the shops. However, I’ve been reluctant though because of some of the ingredients, particulary the synthetic fragrances. So I thought we would give it a go at home.

What about Borax?

To begin, let’s talk about borax. I have included borax in my recipe which a lot of people seem to be concerned about. Yes, borax can cause skin irritation skin (it gives a mild burning sensation) if it is directly applied to the skin. Consequently, I always ensure it’s dissolved in hot water before it’s even added to the glue mixture when I make slime with my girls. I’ve been using Borax in my cleaning recipes for years and like Crunchy Betty I’ll continue to use it as I don’t believe it is toxic if used properly. If you want to know more about Borax and form your own opinions on it, then you should check out her article.

Homemade Slime Recipe

Ingredients:

1 cup Hot Water
1 tsp Borax
½ cup PVA Glue (Elmers is what my 10 year old recommends)
½ cup room temperature water
Food Colouring (optional)
Young Living Essential Oils (choose your favourites)

Some of my favourite essential oils to use in Homemade Slime include:

StressAway essential oil blend– a natural solution created to combat normal stresses that creep into everyday life. Stress Away is the first product to contain the unique stress-relieving combination of lime and vanilla pure essential oils. With an aroma that is the perfect blend of tropical and citrus, Stress Away is uniquely relaxing and comforting.

Lavender essential oil – a wonderful blend of fresh, floral and clean aromas. Perfect for when you want to bring some calm to your house.

Orange essential oil – cold-pressed from the rinds of oranges, has a juicy aroma reminiscent of the fresh fruit. Orange is the happy oil.

Joy essential oil blend– an uplifting blend of pure essential oils that creates magnetic energy and brings happiness to the heart, inspiring romance and togetherness.

Peace & Calming essential oil blend – a gentle, sweet blend of Tangerine, Orange, Ylang Ylang, Patchouli, and Blue Tansy. With a comforting, fresh aroma, this soothing and uplifting blend creates a relaxing environment that’s great for the entire family.

Method:

  • Firstly, dissolve the Borax in the cup of hot water.
  • In a seperate bowl combine the ½ cup glue with the ½ cup room temperature water.
  • Then add food colouring if you want the slime to be a particular colour. You can get coloured glue, which means you won’t need to add the food colouring. However, I prefer to add my own natural food colouring to the mix.
  • Add your favourite Young Living essential oils to the glue mix.
  • Slowly add the borax Mixture to the glue mixture. We do it a teaspoon at a time and the amount you add will make a difference to how stretchy it ends up. We don’t use up all the Borax mixture.
  • After a while it becomes to thick to stir with a spoon so you will need to use your hands. Make sure the borax mixture has been fully absorbed as it can burn hands.
  • Finally, once it is the desired stretchiness store in an air tight container.

Final Thoughts About Slime

Some recipes suggest adding glitter but I’m not a huge fan of it. At least with this slime it breaks down and dissolves in water. If the glitter goes down the drain too I’d hate to think of the fish swallowing it.

Finally, I don’t like fluffy slime made with shaving cream as I’m not a fan of the ingredients in the shaving foam that makes fluffy slime fluffy. If I can find some other natural alternative that works to make it fluffy then I’ll let you know.

Enjoy your slime making. Oh… and if you’re worried about using essential oils with kids, check out this post for some valuable information on that topic.
