Ravinsara or Ravintsara Essential Oil?

ravintsara essential oil

Ravintsara essential oil which is also known as Ho Leaf Oil is often confused with Ravinsara essential oil. They are very similar, but not exactly the same. And in fact, one is becoming endangered.

There are several species of Ravensara that are native to and mostly grown in Madagascar. However, Botanists have now identified that most of the Madagascar oil is in fact Ravintsara (Cinnamomum camphora), not Ravensara aromaticum. They are similar trees but Ravintsara is not an original species in Madagascar. This tall, evergreen tree was introduced from Asia in the 19th century and adapted very efficiently to the new climate. So much so that it is a very ecologically sustainable species for sourcing, unlike Ravensara which is becoming an endangered species.

It really does matter which species an essential oil company is selling. Learn more about the sustainability of essential oils here.

Ravintsara essential oil tested by GC-MS reveals that 1,8-cineol eucalyptol is the main constituent not methyl chavicol (estragole). Ravintsara essential oil contains over 50% eucalyptol. This gives it a similar smell and uses as eucalyptus. Strangely, despite being a camphor tree, Ravintsara essential oil doesn’t contain camphor.

Also, there are oils taken from the bark (Ho Wood) which can contain up to 90% methyl chavicol which is great for tight muscles or after exercise.
