You may have heard of spring cleaning your house, but spring is a great time to spring clean your cosmetics and other toiletry products that are in your beauty bag.
It’s safe to say that you have probably at one time or another bought beauty products from a department store or a supermarket. Many of these products have so many unknown ingredients and companies don’t even have to list them all.
Take the term fragrance for example. It’s not just in perfumes but a lot of your skin care, body products and haircare. Did you know that Fragrance can actually be made up of hundreads of different chemicals and companies don’t have disclose what they are? They tout that these are trade secrets and if they disclosed what was in their products then other companies would copy.
Oh, but surely companies test their products before they sell them? Sure they test their ingredients, but what about when you add together all the ingredients from all of the products you have used on your body in just one day – not a week, a month or a lifetime – but just one day? That’s a LOT of different ingredients being mixed together to make new chemical concoctions.
What scares me is that during a year our kids will be exposed to more nasty chemicals than my grandparents were in their whole lifetime.
Health Issues on the Rise
Do you know anyone with cancer? Trouble getting pregnant? Children who are behind developmentally? Friends who are exhausted ALL. THE. TIME.? Are you raising your hand yet? Even if they remove harmful chemicals from their daily routine it’s not a 100% guarantee that they’ll be free from all these health challenges, as there are a lot of different factors involved in them.
Still, we owe it to ourselves and our loved ones to remove harmful chemicals and do everything we can to buy one more day with our sons or daughters, one more day with our parents or grandkids, or one more day with our best friends or spouses. Would it be worth it to you to do everything you possibly can to be as healthy as possible?
How to have a non-toxic beauty bag
Two really SIMPLE and RELIABLE ways to have products in your beauty bag that are safe and free from harmful chemicals is to:
- Make them yourself! Making your own products and also infusing them with Young Living pure essential oils is a COST-EFFECTIVE way to get premium products. BETTER products for a FRACTION of the cost. If you want a great recipe for an eye serum I make then scroll down in this blog post. I also have a free ebook that is full of my all natural skin, body and hair care DIY recipes that you can make at home.
- Buy your skin, hair and body care products from a company that you can trust. I get all of mine from Young Living. They make their products from all-natural botanicals but they scientifically test them too. I’m really excited about the new BLOOM skin care range Young Living just launched. There are 3 products in the set. Developed to address the appearance of uneven skin that has lost its natural radiance, the BLOOM by Young Living Brightening Skin Care Collection supports brighter, more luminous skin using natural, clean ingredients. Harnessing the power of the Sheerlumé Brightening Complex, the BLOOM Brightening Skin Care Collection is the secret to radiant, glowing skin.
Bloom Brightening Cleanser
The BLOOM by Young Living Brightening Cleanser is a naturally derived facial wash that reveals radiant skin and also leaves your face feeling fresh and smooth. BLOOM Brightening Cleanser is powered by plumeria flower extract, sodium hyaluronate, and pracaxi seed oil that helps to both cleanse and hydrate the skin.
Bloom Brightening Essence
Dull skin’s BFF is BLOOM by Young Living Brightening Essence. Specifically, this luminous, gel-textured essence infuses moisture into skin, refining skin’s look and texture. Additionally, its pH balance-restoring formula supports skin barrier function, reduces the appearance of pores, and leaves your skin refreshed and radiant.
Bloom Brightening Lotion
BLOOM by Young Living Brightening Lotion, featuring the Sheerlumé Brightening Complex, is infused with the most advanced natural ingredients available, brightening the skin’s appearance while boosting natural radiance. BLOOM’s lightweight hydration helps moisturize skin, while antioxidants help minimize the appearance of future damage. BLOOM is formulated with pili pulp oil sourced directly from the Happy Pili Tree Farm and Distillery in the Philippines, cultivated and crafted according to Young Living’s exacting Seed to Seal quality commitment. Native to Southeast Asia, pili pulp oil offers major moisturising benefits for the skin.
DIY Eye serum Recipe for your beauty bag
Another great product for your beauty bag is an eye serum. What is the goal of an eye serum? Like Donne said on Let’s Talk about this week – the first places to show your age is your hands, neck and eyes. So I use an eye serum to firm the skin around my eyes, decrease signs of ageing, and reduce bags and dark circles under my eyes. Basically, no one wants to look in the mirror and be reminded of a raccoon or think, “OMG, it looks like I haven’t slept in DAYS!”
NOPE. Not me. Time to say BYE BYE to sad eyes and HELLO to bright eyes.
Carrier Oils – Eye Serum
One celebrity secret is argan oil, but you definitely do not have to be a celebrity to take advantage of this one. It is non-greasy and non-irritating. Consequently, this makes it a great natural moisturizer to hydrate and soften skin and reduce the visibility of wrinkles. SIGN ME UP! Finally, with its high vitamin E and fatty acid content, argan oil is ideal to give skin a natural boost. YES. PLEASE.
Almond oil is very popular in Southeast Asia and in the Mediterranean region where the almond tree was first domesticated. Obviously it has gained huge popularity in the beauty industry. Here are two of the main reasons I like to use it: first, it creates smooth skin and second, it reduces dark circles under the eyes. According to an article released by “Natural Living Ideas,” some see reduced dark circles in as little as two weeks after applying under the eyes regularly.
Essential oil benefits
Sacred Sandalwood essential oil is very similar to Frankincense. Calming and soothing. Provides a youthful appearance to your skin.
Blue tansy essential oil is a rare botanical in the chamomile family. It has become celebrated for its use in luxury skin care products. Contains skin-cleansing and moisturising benefits.
Geranium essential oil promotes healthy, clear, glowing skin.
Frankincense essential oil is popular for its ability to maintain radiant skin and to smooth the look of healthy skin.
Lemon essential oil contains antioxidants and is refreshing, cleansing, and beneficial to skin.

Break up with your toxic makeup
So this spring take Donne’s advice and “break up with your toxic makeup” and “Spring Clean your Beauty Bag” you’ll be so glad you did.
In conclusion: If you are new to using natural skincare and essential oils on your skin go low and slow. Patch test to see if you might have a reaction. Dilute the essential oils and start with a little. You can always add more but it is harder to get off. To learn what to do if your skin does react check out my blog post.
