Why Natural Hair Care Matters in Summer
Summer brings sunshine, beach days, and pool swims—but it can also leave your hair feeling dry, dull, or lacklustre. That’s why many people turn to natural hair care routines to restore softness and shine without harsh chemicals.
One of the easiest ways to embrace natural hair care is by using essential oils. Not only do they smell incredible, but they can also be blended into DIY treatments that make your hair look and feel refreshed.
Here are my top 5 essential oils for healthy-looking summer hair, along with simple DIY hair care recipes you can try at home.
1. Rosemary for Radiant Hair
Rosemary essential oil has been used in traditional beauty routines for centuries. Its fresh, herbal aroma makes it a favourite addition to DIY hair oil recipes. Many people love incorporating Rosemary essential oil into their natural hair care routine to support hair’s healthy appearance.
How to use:
- Scalp Massage Oil: Blend 4–5 drops Rosemary essential oil with Coconut or Olive Oil, massage into scalp, leave for 5–10 minutes, then wash.
- Rice Water Rinse: Add a few drops Rosemary to fermented rice water for a refreshing post-shampoo rinse.
How to Make Fermented Rice Water
Ingredients:
- ½ cup uncooked organic white rice
- 2–3 cups filtered or distilled water
Instructions:
- Rinse the rice: Place the rice in a fine-mesh strainer and rinse under running water until the water runs clear. This removes dust and impurities.
- Soak the rice: Transfer the rinsed rice into a clean bowl. Add 2–3 cups of water and let it soak for 30 minutes.
- Ferment the rice water: Pour the soaking water into a clean jar or bottle. Leave it at room temperature for 12–24 hours. You’ll notice it may develop a slightly sour smell—this is normal and means fermentation has occurred.
- Strain: After fermentation, strain out any remaining rice grains so you’re left with smooth rice water.
- Optional Additions: Add 5–10 drops of your favourite essential oil (e.g., Lavender, Rosemary, or Peppermint) to give your rinse a fresh aroma and a luxurious feel.
- How to Use:
- After shampooing, pour the fermented rice water over your hair.
- Massage gently through your hair and scalp.
- Leave for 10–20 minutes, then rinse out with plain water.
Storage:
- Keep in a sealed jar in the fridge for up to a week.
- Always smell before use; discard if it smells overly sour or off.
Tip: Fermented rice water can be used 1–2 times per week as part of your natural hair care routine. It’s a gentle, nutrient-rich rinse that adds softness and shine without any harsh chemicals.
2. Lavender for Gentle Summer Hair
Lavender’s soft floral scent makes it one of the most versatile oils in beauty and self-care. It’s often included in natural hair care rituals for its soothing aroma and gentle properties.
How to use:
- Massage Blend: Add 4–5 drops Lavender essential oil to a carrier oil (such as Jojoba or Olive Oil) and massage into scalp before washing.
- DIY Hair Mask: Mix Coconut Oil, 2 egg whites, and a few drops of Lavender oil for a nourishing mask that leaves hair soft and pampered.

- Scalp Blend: Combine Cedarwood with Argan Oil for a nourishing scalp massage before shampooing.
4. Peppermint for Refreshment
Peppermint essential oil is loved for its cool, refreshing aroma. It brings a stimulating, invigorating touch to your summer hair care routine—perfect for hot days.

- Scalp Refresh: Add Peppermint to a carrier oil, massage lightly, and rinse out for a fresh-feeling scalp.
5. Tea Tree for a Clean, Fresh Scalp
Tea Tree essential oil has a crisp, cleansing aroma and is often used in DIY natural hair care to refresh and maintain scalp comfort.
